Mosquitoes ruin summer evenings, spread disease, and most of the things we do about them don't work very well. One popular fix is a yard spray service: someone shows up, fogs your yard, and you get a few weeks of relief. The problem is what's in the fog.
Most mosquito sprays use pyrethroids, which are broad-spectrum insecticides. They kill mosquitoes, but they also kill bees, butterflies, fireflies, and the predatory insects that eat mosquitoes.
Mosquitoes reproduce on a 7 to 14 day cycle. The predators that eat them reproduce much slower. After a spray, the mosquitoes bounce back within a couple weeks, but the predators can take months to recover.
